EGYPT TOP GROUP A

Egypt topped Group A at the African Cup of Nations after beating Ivory Coast 3-1 at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.
It is important to note that Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam, limped off in the first-half with a groin injury and was replaced by veteran Hossam Hassan, said he hoped to be fit in time for Egypt's quarter-final game.
Despite the defeat, Ivory Coast had already qualified for the last eight, after winning their first two group matches against Libya and Morocco.
Both countries will know their opponents after Sunday's final matches in Group B - leaders Cameroon take on second-placed DR Congo, while Angola take on fellow World Cup debutants Togo.

ALL HAIL THE EAGLES.

John Mikel Obi guided Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and to the top of Group D at the African Cup of Nations on Friday.
Coming on as a second-half substitute, Obi swung in a corner for Christian Obodo to head home for the first goal in the 57th minute.
Moments later the 18-year-old scored his first senior goal for Nigeria, with a low 20-yard shot that flew in the bottom corner of Gift Muzadzi's goal.
Nigeria need a draw in their final game against Senegal to reach the last eight, while Zimbabwe cannot advance.

OKOCHA OUT

Nigeria will still be without captain and influential midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha, as he is nursing a thigh injury.
But John Utaka is expected to make the starting line-up in place of Lille forward Osaze Odemwingie , with Kanu once again on the bench.
Zimbabwe will be looking to keep their hopes of qualification for the quarter-finals alive by avoiding defeat against the Super Eagles.

GUINEA SAIL THROUGH

Pascal Feindouno (right) celebrates his winner with Fode MansareGuinea came back from a goal down to seal their qualification for the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations as they beat Zambia 2-1.
Pascal Feindouno slammed in a brilliant shot off the underside of the bar in stoppage time to break Zambian hearts.
Zambia took the lead just after the half-hour mark when captain Elijah Tana headed home James Chamanga's corner.
Guinea levelled in the 74th minute with a penalty, Feindouno slotting in after George Kolola had fouled Fode Mansare.
Guinea left it late to seal the points in this Group C clash and in truth they struggled badly at times against a determined Zambian outfit, who took a deserved lead through skipper Tana.
Indeed Tana went close with a free

IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW

HI i decided to give you a run down of events just in case you dont know.Below is a copy of the African Nations Cup Time-Table.

OLISEH QUITS THE ROUND LEATHER GAME

Nigerian legend Sunday Oliseh has announced his immediate retirement from the game.
The 31-year-old was with Belgian outfit Racing Genk - but he has now left them and ended his professional playing career.
Oliseh enjoyed a 16-year career which saw him join his first club Liege in 1990.
He then enjoyed spells with Reggiana, Cologne, Ajax, Juventus, Bochum and Borussia Dortmund.
Oliseh was also one of his country's leading players over the past decade - having won over 50 caps for the Super Eagles.

IVORY COAST CRUISE TO QUATER FINALS.

Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure scored as the Ivory Coast defeated Libya in their African Cup of Nations Group A match at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday.
The result leaves Ivory Coast with six points after two games and a place in the quarter-finals, after Egypt drew 0-0 with rivals Morocco in the other Group A game.
"I'm delighted that we've qualified for the quarter-final and all credit go the players," said Ivory Coast coach Henri Micheal.
But the West Africans were given a genuine scare by the impressive Libya, who equalised through Abdelsalam Khamis.
Ivory Coast just need a point against hosts Egypt in their final group game to emerge as group winners.

BATTLE OF SUPREMACY.

The latest chapter in Nigeria's rivalry with Ghana produced a 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles in Group D of the 2006 African Nations Cup finals.

A fiercely struck shot from Marseille left back Taye Taiwo five minutes from time settled a keenly contested affair at a packed El Masry stadium in Port Said.

The game was heading for a draw when the Super Eagles won a free-kick 30 yards out.

Yussuf Ayila rolled the ball to Taiwo whose long-range shot flew past Ghana goalkeeper Sammy Adjei.

This match was hyped up to the heavens but the opening exchanges almost put the crowd to sleep as the two teams took a safety-first approach.

Nigeria began the second period with menacing intent.
Ghana have become the third of Africa's World Cup qualifiers to lose their opening match at the Nations Cup following Angola and Togo's defeats to Cameroon and the DR Congo

WHO BRINGS THE CUP HOME?

With great anticipation,Africa's biggest soccer extravaganza is here again and with it comes the chance for teams that did not make the world cup to prove their worth. Teams like Nigeria,Cameroun,Senegal,Egypt,South Africa and those who have already qualified for the world cup to use this tournament as a stepping stone to their preparations come june when the world cup kicks up proper.come january 20 when the nations cup kicks off proper, with the opening match between Egypt and Libya with the host team in total support from the fans,it will be a showcase of skill and phisique, pride and patriotism. As we hope to see big stars like Didier Drogba, Diouf,Eto'o) and emerging talents( Obafemi Martins,Taye Taiwo) in action.
if you ask my opinion on who will win the nations cup;looking at the different teams and the evolution of the game in Africa at the moment, this edition might be too close to call. However the two(2) teams i feel will do well are Ivory Coast and Cameroun.
